Sodium Hypochlorite

Sodium hypochlorite is used for water disinfection and maintaining water treatment facilities in proper sanitary condition by dosing the obtained solution into the source or drinking water in accordance with the technological scheme of water treatment and disinfection. Additionally, sodium hypochlorite can also be used for treating water in swimming pools, neutralizing wastewater, and so on. These hypochlorite systems can be used in water treatment systems for water supply companies, wastewater treatment facilities in industrial enterprises, as well as in medical institutions, sanitary and epidemiological services, childcare facilities, swimming pools, public catering establishments, and others as equipment for producing disinfectants.

On-site production of sodium hypochlorite using electrolysis units is not classified as a hazardous industrial facility.

Components of a Hypochlorite system

- Electrolyzers for obtaining sodium hypochlorite.

Reliability is paramount

Disinfection of drinking water, in terms of its functional significance within the overall water supply system, belongs to the first category of water supply reliability. Therefore, the technological unit of the installation that directly produces the disinfecting agent (electrolyzer and power block) must have a backup in case of an emergency situation with the main (working) block and be connected to it in parallel: for 1-4 working electrolyzers, there should be 1 backup, and for more than four, there should be 2 backups.


The backup equipment ensures the technological reliability of sodium hypochlorite production and allows for increasing the dosage of the introduced solution by 50-100% (based on active chlorine) during periods of epidemiological or technological hazards. It can also be used to allocate the backup capacity for the sanitation of storage and filtration facilities, pipelines, and other sanitation processes.


The technological units of the reagent management system, water decarbonization, and storage equipment serve the entire installed series of electrolyzers, including the backups.


In order to optimize costs (reduction by up to 50%), there is the possibility of flexible selection of pumping equipment, regulating and control equipment, and the degree of automation according to the customer's requirements.

Equipment configuration & operation

The capacity of the installation is up to 20 kg/hour of active chlorine, with a concentration of active chlorine in the solution of up to 10 g/liter. The power supply voltage is 24V, and the current ranges from 300-600A.

Seawater is supplied to the electrolyzer from the system. The solution of sodium hypochlorite obtained in the electrolyzer is transferred to a storage tank, from where it is pumped and dosed as required using a dosing pump.

The operation of the installation is carried out in automatic mode. Maintenance personnel are required to monitor the operation of the installation and control the consumption and concentration of the sodium hypochlorite solution.

Transformer-rectifier module

A rectifier is a device in the power supply system that converts the incoming alternating current (AC) voltage into the required level of direct current (DC) voltage, which is supplied to the generator electrodes to carry out the electrolysis process.

The rectifier also requires strict control of key equipment for sodium hypochlorite production, especially when it comes to powerful high-voltage rectifiers.

Control and management system

The control and monitoring distribution system consists of a distribution cabinet, a control cabinet, a cabinet for controlling frequency converters, and separate control panels. 

The system utilizes automated control based on a programmable logic controller (PLC) (excluding the cleaning process), allowing for monitoring various parameters through a human-machine interface and data uploading to the central control system.
